Every organization knows the importance of training their employees. But what if those being sent for training had faithfully attended them and learned new skills but nevertheless still contributed nothing towards their productivity or the organization’s strategic goals? This invites the questions – Are your employees being sent for the right training? And are those being sent for training able to implement what they have learned into their work?
Without a clear understanding of the needs of employees and the impact of training on your organization, money and time spent on training will be wasted.
The perfect training is where the training objectives successfully power up the employees’ effective performance to meet the organization’s business goals. So, read on to learn how you could create the perfect training.
The 7-Step Strategy to Align Training Goals With Business Objectives
The bottom line is – Training goals must meet your organization’s business objectives. Aligning training to business needs has a positive impact on the organization. The better the organization does, the more its employees benefit from a stable job and career advancement opportunities.
Fortunately, all of these can be accomplished with a 7-step implementation:
1. Define the future: Understand why it is important to match training to needs of employees
This strategy begins by focusing on the vision, mission, and goals that make the future of your business promising. Define your goals clearly, with as little ambiguity as possible.
2. Find the Gaps: Learn how to match training to needs of employees
Next, you’ll want to find out how well your employees are performing according to these business goals. This process is often referred to as a training needs analysis.
Do employees have the right knowledge, skills, and abilities to achieve the organization’s vision? If not, what are they missing? And how effective have existing training programs been in developing the required areas to reach your goals?
3. Set Strategic Development Objectives: Know how to align training to business goals and strategies
Set objectives of your training to fill the gaps identified in Step 2. Place the focus on developing training objectives that will lead employees to learn the knowledge, skills, and abilities they need to learn to achieve the business vision.
4. Communicate training purpose and objectives: Avoid the unnecessary time, effort and money in staff training and development
Clearly communicate the purpose of training, how completing training helps the business to reach its objectives for learning and development, and how that moves the organization closer to its long-term vision.
5. Delivery
Deliver the training session. And then review and improve training system, processes, and practices – Is the training effective? Meaning, is it engaging, accessible, convenient and suited to your target audience?
6. Support new learning in the workplace: Active Encouragement for Employees to practice their skills
Once training is complete, your employees need to test drive their new skills in the workplace. But if for some reason, their colleagues and managers in that department do not support this approach, then you can be sure that employees will return to the old way of doing things, defeating the purpose of the learning.
So, for training to have a lasting impact on achieving learning and development goals, create a workplace culture that supports continuous learning. From leadership levels and down, there should be active encouragement for employees to practice what they have learned from the training in the workplace.
7. Post-Training: Measure and Repeat
- Record your training completion rates (attendance)
- Collect and vet your learners’ feedback
- Get feedback on their performance in training.
To measure the impact of the training on an individual level and organizational performance, in the long run, go a step further by returning to those clear business goals and employee performance objectives (in Step 1). Evaluate the improvement in your employees’ performance and assess how much closer the business is to achieve its strategic goals.
Constantly review with areas for improvement in mind- Returning to Step 1 for every new analysis.
