Introduction to Criminology and Psychology

Why do people commit crimes? What defines certain behaviors as criminal? In this two-day professional certification, participants will delve into the causes of crime, exploring critical criminological theories and the social factors that contribute to criminal behavior. The program will encourage participants to brainstorm and discuss potential solutions to crime, examining various approaches to crime prevention and rehabilitation.

Methodology and Practical Application

This course provides an in-depth understanding of criminology and psychology, equipping participants with the theoretical tools and methodological skills used by criminology practitioners. Participants will explore key criminological areas and gain practical insights through case studies and activities. The course includes both theoretical and practical sessions, ensuring that learners can apply their knowledge effectively. Upon completion of both days, a certification will be awarded to attendees.

Upon completion of the course, learners will be able to understand:

1. Impact of Social Psychology on criminal  – Understand and explain the factors that lead people to behave in a given way in the presence of others and the conditions under which certain behaviours and feelings occur.
2. Availability Heuristics & its effects – Examining mental shortcut that relies on immediate examples that come to mind and its effects.
3. Fundamentals to Personality – Introduction to basic theories of personality; learn personality system & sub-system, resisting personality and conformity.
4. Singapore’s Criminal Justice System – Introduced to criminology; Examine how Singapore governed in the context of law has shaped the criminal justice with reference to criminal statistics; Social contract
5. Positivist Criminology & Criticism –Focuses on studying the relationship between criminal behaviour and any external factors and criticism.

Mr Anil Singh - Expert Trainer in Psychology and Mental Wellness

Anil is currently a Senior Associate Lecturer, Trainer, Academic Coach, and Mental Wellness coach with 13 years of experience at various government and private institutions. He is a highly versatile educator and trainer in the areas of Public Safety & Security, Psychology, Sociology, and Interdisciplinary Studies.

As a mental wellness coach, Anil is a passionate advocate of mental wellness and psychological safety in schools, workplaces, and personal life. He aspires to motivate organisations and individuals to develop a culture of mental wellness for their staff, clients and students. Prior to lecturing full-time, Anil was a Community Outreach Manager with the National Addictions Management Service (NAMS), Institute of Mental Health (IMH), and an Executive Director of a community drug rehabilitation centre. 

Anil holds a Master of Social Sciences from the National University of Singapore, a Graduate Certificate in Innovative Approaches for Adult Learners (SUSS), and a Graduate Certificate in Social Sciences (Professional Counselling) from the Swinburne University of Technology.
