Industries can be divided into two main categories: a) Manufacturing & b) Service. Manufacturing industries produce tangible goods and the service industries produce services.

  • In terms of enterprise turn-over and gross domestic products, service industries play more important roles than manufacturing industries, especially in developed countries. While there are many common processes between these two categories, each has some special characteristics that need a different approach to managing and improving them.
  • Moreover, most developing countries are investing on their service industries like tourism, ports, and so on to promote their nations. Therefore, we see this module can be useful in understanding not only developed countries but also in developing ones.
  • Finally, international cooperation in different geographical scopes between developed countries (like in the EU) and developing countries (like global supply chains containing China, India, many Eastern Asian countries, and Middle East with Western countries) make the subject matter of this module one of the most important flourishing academic areas.

This module explores the concepts, tools and techniques associated with Service Operations and Supply Chain Management. It focuses upon service evaluation, enhancement, and improvement. The module is suitable for careers in different service industries like retailing, financial services, and consultancy. The module will introduce students the nature and scope of Service Operations Management within both private and public sector

operations. It will teach how to examine the growing literature associated with service operations and to introduce concepts, tools and techniques that will accommodate the assessment, analysis, and improvement of service offerings.
