Anger. No one likes it and no one wants it, yet it is a part of everyday life. Unfortunately, it can quickly get out of control. Rage or aggression can lead to problems at work and in personal relationships. Anger can be suppressed, converted or redirected. But can it also be avoided?

Why do some individuals seem angrier than others? Evidence has shown that the cause is largely genetic or physiological and family background also plays a role. Research also suggests there are distinctive neurological changes in the brains of angry individuals where the growth of new nerve cells triggers even more rage in the future. It simply means that the vicious cycle continues where angry individuals get angrier!

In the workplace, angry clients and/or colleagues can cause personal anguish, work disruption & affect business decisions. So, how do we address the challenges arising from these angry people?

For a person expressing or experiencing anger, the limbic system (emotional center) is mainly activated. Recent neuroscience discoveries indicate that rewiring the brain can be quickly and easily achieved through simple techniques such as meditation. The management of angry clients and/or colleagues is a form of professional competency that will require soft skills where different approaches maybe required. The goal is to manage the relationship by staying task-focused, emotionally protecting oneself, and establishing new ways of relating.

Interestingly, it is also found that our emotional brain has a direct effect on decision making and leadership. Hence, by exploring leadership from a neuroscience perspective, we not only can gain new knowledge but also attain useful insights!
