Introduction

The field of learning games is rapidly growing, with interest from academics, publishers, schools and startups. But what makes a good learning game? Where do ideas come from and how do you create them? These are the questions that this workshop will attempt to answer.

Learning thru Games

The premise of learning games from some perspectives seems like a perfect and easy solution – get people to learn things they don’t want to by motivating them through game play. To others it seems like an oxymoron – if learning is hard then it can’t possibly be fun at the same time. The key to designing good learning games is to reconcile these perspectives by creating games that focus on creating environments that are both fun and challenging. This idea will be a central tenet of this workshop.

Create Your Own Game to Facilitate Learning

Through this 2-day workshop, participants will explore contemporary games and learn the principles of Game Design. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own analog (non-digital) Learning Game.

 

If you love games and want to learn how to make them, then this workshop will start you down that path. Making games is a creative and technical art form. In this workshop you will familiarize yourself with the tools and practices of game design. No programming or other technical skills necessary

Andy is an experienced Trainer, certified LEGO Serious Play Facilitator and a High Performance Team Coach. His first game – Fishy Business is undergoing the publishing process and will be available by Christmas.

Andy has worked for various Fortune 500 companies; Microsoft, HP, Research in Motion (Blackberry), Reuters and Fujitsu leading Customer Support teams. While there, he specialized in transforming unmotivated and disengaged customer service teams find the impetus to want to succeed and excel. The highlight of his career was being awarded the Fujitsu President’s Award for Outstanding Achievements.
